Canadiana Pt. 2 - Bagged Milk

When I was teaching, I always appreciated the unsolicited questions about what it's like being from Canada (I, like the students, love the chance to divert away from a lesson plan to talk about completely unrelated things). I think the item that got the biggest laughs and most quizzical looks was bagged milk.

In 'merica, milk comes in jugs and cartons.

In Canada, being more environmentally friendly and eco-conscious, milk comes in bags. See below.

Arriving at 1 litre (a little larger than a quart for those of you following along below the 49th parallel), bags of milk supposedly use less plastic than their jug counterpart. To use you simply place the bag in your reusable container (I remember having one in the shape of the Nesquik bunny) and snip off the front corner and pour. The trick is to make sure the bag is fully seated in its container. A couple of smart whacks on the bottom of the container will ensure this. Failure to do so may result in the top part of the bag folding over onto itself resulting in the uncontrollable spilling of milk. Trust me. I saw Duncan do it.
