The stars aligned for Charlie and me last night. Charlie got home from work early and we were lucky enough to get to go out to eat. I instantly thought Fat Canary but didn't think we'd be able to get a reservation on such short notice. It turns out there was a cancellation and Brown, party of 2 was available! We threw on our clothes and were out the door for out 8 pm reservation. We had to fight some people for a parking space (how is it so crowded in CW at 8 pm on a Tuesday night, I ask you) and were in like Flynn. We sat down at our lovely table, intending to enjoy this meal to the fullest, Charlie telling the waiter we in no hurry at all (except we were in kind of a hurry if we wanted the special because there were only four left). While perusing the menu, we snacked on bread and champagne for me (Roederer, it reminded me of Pebble Beach) and a martini for Charlie. Our dinners consisted of a spring greens salad and rack of lamb for me and the foie gras and halibut for Charlie (incidentally that was the special and Charlie got the last one, according to our waiter). For dessert, our waiter told us of a blueberry and blackberry swirl sorbert which obviously I had to get. After deciding against the cheese plate, Charlie went for a cinnamon walnut cake with calvados (an apple brandy) ice cream, which I really liked! The best thing about eating out in Virginia is that you are allowed to cork and carry out the wine you don't finish, so we were able to save about half of our bottle of wine when we didn't drink it. Charlie rounded out the evening with a port and I had a glass of Pelee Island icewine (hi Niagara region!).
We had a wonderful evening and celebrated the fact that 2 years means permanent permanent residence for my alien husband :)
P.S.: Happy Bastille Day!
