Fat Canary Review...Beat that Zagat's

Last night, Charlie surprised me for my birthday by making reservations at a restaurant I had been wanting to try. Well, I kind of ruined the surprise by coming home too early from school, thus ruining any dramatic flair he had planned.

We changed from our school and shop clothes and made it to the restaurant by 8. The Fat Canary (honestly, that's the name) is right on DoG street (Duke of Gloucester Street for you non-locals) so I thought the atmosphere might be a little influenced by the colonial hubbub all around it. I could not be more wrong--the interior was modern with a great feel in it. They had just changed their menu a week ago and I hadn't gotten past the appetizers before I realized I wanted to order everything. Alas, late twenty-somethings cannot order the entire menu....

My Meal:
Ginger Pork Ribs with Marinated Cucumber Salad
Roasted Free-Range (obviously, hi Dad) Chicken with Truffles, parsnips, fingerling potatoes and pancetta
Lemon-Vodka Sorbet (continuing my goal to try every sorbet concoction a chef has every thought to create)

Charlie's Meal:
Fricasee of Rabbit (I forget the rest...)
Seared Sea Scallops with Brussel Sprouts and Pork Belly--which, and you might want to sit down, I really liked!!
Coffee (I tried to get him to get the cheese plate but Charlie is a cheese snob)

We had a really great meal and definitely look forward to eating there again when I can hopefully try the Arugula salad with quail bacon and shallot vinaigrette and the filet or the pork tenderloin!
